What is Brain Bee?
The Brain Bee is a program designed to motivate high school students to learn more about neuroscience. (Something about IBB will be helpful)
What is SJ Brain Bee?
SJ Brain Bee is a first of kind of regional competition being held in SJ. This is open to all high school students in South Jersey including Philadelphia etc. The winners from SJ BB can participate in National BB , which will lead them to IBB.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Participant must be enrolled in a high school program.
Participant must be no younger than 13 year and not older than 19 years as of <date>
Participant must not have participated in the BB in the last one year.
WHY SHOULD I PARTICIPATE?
By participating, high school students learn about the brain and its vital function in our lives. They gain an appreciation for neuroscience that might one day lead them to become neurologists or neuroscientists to treat and conquer the very diseases covered in the Brain Bees.
There are awards for the participants and winners of the local and national competitions. Awards may usually include certificates, prize money, trophies, and trips for the winner to the next level of the competition. In the IBB Championship, the third place winner receives $1000; the second place winner receives $2000, and the first place winner receives $3000, an individual trophy, a traveling trophy for his or her high school to display, and a summer internship with an esteemed neuroscientist.
HOW CAN I PREPARE:
FOR THE REGIONAL BRAIN BEE:
Most questions will be based on the book BRAIN FACTS. A downloadable PDF form of the publication is available at the Society for Neuroscience's
website.
FOR THE NATIONAL BRAIN BEE:
In addition to Brain Facts, "Neuroscience: The Science of the Brain" is also included. Copies can be freely downloaded from the web site of the International Brain Research Organization. Go to
www.ibro.org and click on Brain Campaign.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT ON COMPETITION DAY FOR THE SJ BRAIN BEE?
1. You will arrive at the venue.
2. You will take a written exam of 25 questions (multiple choice).
3. If successful, you will proceed to the finals.
4. There will be 10-15 participants in the finals.
5. Questions in the final may be read out or visual and may require one word or short answers (see below).
6. You will be asked a question. You will begin answering within one minute – you have up to two minutes to finish your answer. The judge(s) may ask you to explain/expand on your answer or may ask more questions. At the end, you may be awarded a score or a strike. If you accumulate two strikes, you are out.
7. If you are the last person standing, you will represent SJ Brain Bee in the National Finals!!
8. SJ Brain Bee recognizes the top three finalists.
9. All participants will earn a certificate.
